UGI says a number of its customers have received scam phone calls claiming they owe money for their energy bills.
The callers claim that if the customers fail to pay, their service will be shut off later in the day.
The callers then instruct the customer to purchase a pre-paid debit card and call back with the card number to make a payment, according to a UGI news release.
UGI says the phone calls are not from them or an agent of the company. The company says it would not recommend a prepaid credit card as an option for payment.
Most calls have been received by residential customers who are current on their account, according to the news release.
Natural gas and electric customers who receive such a call should contact UGI at 800-276-2722.
