New Pa. law hikes penalties for fleeing fatal crash

Posted: Updated:

A new law signed by Governor Tom Corbett will increase penalties for fleeing the scene of a fatal crash.

The legislation signed Monday upgrades the crime from a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony, and it increases the maximum sentence from up to seven years to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

The minimum sentence for fleeing a fatal crash is three years, the same for DUI drivers who cause fatal crashes.

Previously, drivers involved in a crash who could no longer be tested for alcohol faced a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison.

The new law takes effect in 60 days.
