Legislation to create new specialty license plates for Pennsylvania veterans is awaiting the signature of Governor Tom Corbett.

The state legislature on Monday gave final approval to Senate Bill 1187, which provides for a number of new license plates designed to honor military service.

One new plate honors Combat Infantry Badge recipients, while others are available for those who have earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, the Combat Action Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge.

The legislation also expands eligibility for Merchant Marines plates for those who served during the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Desert Shield.

Several other specialty plates are included in the legislation, including a new Pennsylvania Monuments license plate that will provide funding for restoration projects in Gettysburg National Military Park.

Additional specialty plates include an “In God We Trust” plate and a United States Olympic plate to help amateur athletes from Pennsylvania advance to the Olympic Games.

The proposal also includes the creation of new Hunting Heritage plates to fund conservation, youth hunting and game donation programs.
