Local veteran receives generous gift

Posted: Updated:
YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

Shopping at the mall with your wife can be tiring.

"She was still shopping, so I told my wife, 'I'll sit here and wait for you,' " Joe Sheetz of York said.

While he was patiently waiting, two young girls approached the World War II Veteran with a surprising offer.

"They said, 'Jesus sent us with a gift.' I looked down and it was a $50 bill," Sheetz said.

At first, Sheetz said he could not accept their generous gift, but the girls insisted.

"They said, 'You must take it. It's a gift from Jesus,' " Sheetz said.

Sheetz believes the girls approached him because he was wearing his WWII hat.

"I wear this hat not for myself, but for the guys who didn't come back with me," he said. "It chokes me up sometimes when I think about this."

Sheetz is left with the $50 and many questions, but he says with all the negativity in the world today those girls represent hope.

"I can see the world changing and I've seen it in those girls' faces," he said.

Sheetz plans on paying it forward and picking up right where those girls left off.

"I would like to give it to the wounded veterans, but I must have their approval to do that," he said.

Which is the reason why he is now trying to find the girls.

"It's half torn but I won't get rid of it until this story ends, so I do hope that these people who gave it to me, even if it's just to come up to shake my hand, that's the day I'll let this go to somebody else," Sheetz said.

Anyone who can help Sheetz contact with the girls may email Steven Fisher at sfisher@abc27.com.
