Marcell Dareus trial to be held during NFL season

Posted: Updated:
Hamburg, NY -

Marcell Dareus is scheduled to be back in court two days after the Buffalo Bills season opener.

The non-jury trial for what authorities call a street-racing incident will begin Sept. 9 in Hamburg, NY. The Bills and their Pro Bowl defensive tackle open the 2014 season at Chicago on Sept. 7.

The former Alabama star was arrested after he crashed his 2012 Jaguar on May 30. Witnesses saw the vehicle cross two lanes of oncoming track before hitting a tree. Hamburg Police charged Dareus with more than six offenses including second degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and participating in an illegal speed contest.

It was Dareus' second arrest of the month. He was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia from a traffic stop in Cleburne County on May 5. Dareus was granted a pretrial intervention program that could clear his record of those charges.

Dareus was selected third-overall by the Bills in 2011. The team picked up his fifth-year option earlier this offseason.
