Martinsville Speedway Transforms Into Mini Amusement Park For Celebration 2014

Posted:
Martinsville, VA - Fourth of July celebrations started up in Martinsville on Thursday.

Crowds flocked to the Martinsville Speedway, where the gates opened at 3 p.m. for Celebration 2014.

Representatives at the speedway were all hoping for good weather, but said if it starts to pour then they will have to put everything on hold until it stops. Workers transformed the speedway into a mini amusement park and concert arena. All the rides are free to the public.

There was also a chance to dunk Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell.  For $5, folks got three chances to dunk him.

All of the fun was all to raise money for Fuel for Families, which is a United Way program that helps restock food banks in the area.

Live entertainment started in the evening with three bands. The headliners are country music band, The Cadillac Three.

Thousands flock to the celebration every year, many said it's become their family tradition, and that's why the Martinsville Speedway says they keep it going.

"We like to be a good corporate citizen to our community and there's a lot of people that look forward to this. We started it 16 years ago and we realized then that we couldn't stop it and it's gotten to the point now people expect it,"  Campbell said.

Attendees are asked to bring some canned good for the Fuel for Families Food Drive. The festivities end at 11 p.m.

If the weather permits, the Speedway will have their big fireworks display at 10 p.m.
