A structure fire resulted in the death of a Schuylkill County man early Sunday morning.
Police said that Richard T. Dermo, 65, of 33 S. Maple Ave, Cass Township, was found dead after firefighters were unable to enter his home due to the strength of the fire. Police also said that Dermo's home did not contain smoke detectors.
The Cass Township Fire Department, along with neighboring fire departments, arrived at the victim's home Sunday morning with the report of a heavy structure fire and possible entrapment within the residence. Dermo's home, as well as his neighbor's home, sustained heavy damage.
Police said that Dermo's neighbor, Edward J. Drasdis, 50, of 35 S. Maple Ave., was awaken by smoke detectors within his residence and was able to escape without sustaining any injuries.
The fire is still being investigated through the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal unit as well as the Schuylkill County Coroner's office.
