Calhoun County Sheriff's office warns of repeat rapist

Posted: Updated:
CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. - Sexual assaults of elderly women the past two Julys may be a pattern rather than a coincidence.

Calhoun County investigators warn the repeat rapist may attack another victim this month.

"We're in July again," chief deputy Matthew Wade said.

"In the past two Julys in Calhoun and Talladega County, a senior adult female has been followed from a public place, patterned, and then later attacked and sexually assaulted by a person."

The Calhoun and Talladega County sheriffs announced in September that evidence appeared to point to the same culprit in two different rapes, a year apart.

An 82-year-old woman in Alexandria told deputies in July 2012 that a man in a white four-door sedan followed her home from shopping.  The driver assaulted, raped, and stole from her.

In July 2013, a 67-year-old woman drove home from running errands when a man in a white four-door sedan came to her home, claiming to sell books.  He forced his way into the home, and raped and stole from the woman.

Investigators said the victims have no connection, but suspect there is a pattern to the man's behavior.

"We have been to Montgomery, we have been to other counties ... working with other agencies across the state to try to see if there's other cases that we don't know about that are the same person," Wade said.

"We are working with the FBI Violent Criminal Apprehension Program to see if there are other offenses in the nation that fit this profile."

Wade said deputies fear the man may have another sexual assault on his July calendar, and he warned people to be on the lookout for someone following them home.  He said if something seems out of the ordinary, it probably is.

"We feel that he patterned them, followed them home, he made sure of the surroundings before he went," Wade said.

"So if you are a senior adult or just any age female, so when you are out in retail stores.  Be careful, be vigilant who might be around you, who might be following you.

Investigators have no leads in these cases.  The victims described the man as an African-American male, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighing around 200 pounds.

Since the sexual assaults already happened in at least two counties, Wade said the next victim might be somewhere else.

"It may not be Calhoun.  It may not be Talladega.  It may be somewhere in the viewing area of ABC 33/40 so we want women to be careful."

The governor's office issued a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.  Calhoun County Crimestoppers is also offering an additional $1,000 reward.
