Corbett signs budget, vetoes funding for legislature

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Governor Tom Corbett says he's signing forcing "mutual sacrifice" on Pennsylvania lawmakers who failed to deliver the public employee and school pension reform he wants.

Corbett signed the state budget Wednesday but line-item vetoed $65 million in General Assembly spending and an additional $7.2 million in legislative-designated spending.

The governor said that while agencies under his jurisdiction returned $425 million of unneeded funds in the face of a $1.5 billion deficit, the General Assembly refused to use $75 million of its $150 million in reserves to help balance the budget.

Corbett said the legislature instead increased its own $330 million budget by two percent, and charged taxpayers an additional $5 million to pay for their parking, filled the state budget with earmarks driven by high-powered lobbyists, and refused to deal with the state's pension crisis.
