Middle school eliminates shorts ban

Posted: Updated:
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. (WHTM) -

A ban on shorts no longer stands at one Lancaster County middle school.

Garden Spot Middle School proposed the ban last month because students were wearing shorts that were considered too short.

Parents and students upset with the ban showed up to a town hall meeting at the school Thursday night. After some heated discussion, the principal decided to back off the ban and instead implement a "mid-thigh" rule for the upcoming school year.

"We had a dialogue and we are willing to engage in conflict resolution. Certainly we have a policy now that has a little more teeth in it than before, to mid-thigh," principal Jeffrey Starr said.

"I love the new rule change," student Lauryn Aschcroft said. "It makes my life a whole lot easier."

If students violate the rule, they can lose the privilege of wearing sorts for the rest of the semester.
