Restaurant Row in Harrisburg hoping to continue new era

Posted: Updated:
There have already been some noticeable changes to Restaurant Row on Second Street in Harrisburg.

A couple of places that tended to attract somewhat contentious customers have vanished. Crime in the area has gone down, and patrons have noticed.

"I think they're going in the right direction," said Dean Whittaker. "Any improvement will help."

Existing businesses are renovating. The Hilton already has renovations underway to add a fine dinning and casual restaurant to the first floor. A pizza shop is going up at Second and State Streets. Good for them -- good for others.

"In fact it might give it a shot in the arm down town," said Joe Lucia of Harrisburg.

Stocks on Second Street has been there for 16 years and is also going to have a make-over -- a new floor, new furniture, and more.

"Completely new restaurant concept -- new bar," owner Stephen Weinstock said. "We plan on changing the concept to a gastro pub idea with a whiskey bar."

Weinstock says they will be changing the menu as well, and will still look to cater to all age groups.

"The clientele has changed over the years," he said. "We're shooting for a young professional crowd. They seem to be supporting downtown in great numbers."

"Stephen does everything right," Whittaker said. "It will be a great improvement. Every thing he does will be top shelf. It will be nice."

And don't ever worry that you're getting too old for Second Street. Come out early.

"The older people--or the people who are not chippies any more," said Lucia. "They come down earlier and they don't stay late any more. That's why this place was always good like that."

Stocks will close for about five days for the renovations starting Sunday, July 27th. They expect to open by Friday.
