LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

An 18-year-old is recovering from a gunshot wound to the buttocks following a police-involved shooting in Lancaster Friday night.

According to Lancaster police, officers attempted to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation in the area of Brandon Park at around 8 p.m. Officers activated their emergency lights and siren and the vehicle, a black Hyundai Sonata, fled west on Hazel Street toward Prospect Street.

Investigators said a male passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The Sonata continued west on Union Street, police said.

As officers began chasing the passenger, they said they observed him attempting to remove a handgun from his front waistband. The male eventually removed the handgun from his waistband and raised/extended his arm while holding the gun in his hand, police said.

A pursuing officer fired two shots, striking the male one time in the right buttocks. The suspect was taken into custody and treated at a local hospital.

Police said he is facing numerous criminal charges in connection with this incident, but have not released his name.

Detectives are continuing their search for the vehicle that fled, a black 2011 Hyundai Sonata, bearing PA registration JNY-6343. If this vehicle is seen, please contact police by calling 911 immediately.
