Grand jury rejects claim that police hurt teen

Posted: Updated:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A grand jury has rejected the claim by a Philadelphia teen that police severely injured his groin during an aggressive pat-down.

District Attorney Seth Williams says the panel concluded officers did not use excessive force in the case, which had generated an outcry on social media.

A lawyer for 16-year-old Darrin Manning had alleged the teen needed genital surgery after a body search in January. Lawyer Lewis Small says police had no reason to frisk Manning, who was walking to a basketball game with teammates.

Williams says grand jurors watched surveillance video and heard from more than two dozen witnesses, including Manning and a surgeon. The doctor testified the surgery was exploratory and found no injury.

Small says he disagrees with the report, calling the conduct of police totally inappropriate.
