Police warn of possible security company scams

Posted: Updated:
There's a warning this week about possible security scammers in Central Alabama neighborhoods. People are worried if door-to-door security company employees are really who they say they are.

In fact, the Leeds Police Department has received tons of calls regarding recent questionable activity. A detective tells ABC 33/40 he has heard concerns from people in Pell City as well.

People have reported seeing men and women, claiming to be ADT employees or ADT-authorized dealer employees, going door-to-door offering services. Some residents worry the offers may be fraudulent.

The Leeds Police Department says, at this time, all suspected scammers have turned out to be employees with ADT-authorized dealers. However, the investigation is ongoing.

ADT spokesperson Bob Tucker, however, says there are reports of scams across the country, and, typically, cases increase in the summer months. Tucker says scammers pose to be with the company and trick customers into signing new contracts. He encourages people to check with ADT to verify someone's employment and services.

Just last year, ADT settled a lawsuit with Utah-based Vision Security. ADT provided ABC 33/40 with video it used in that lawsuit. The video allegedly shows a Vision Security employee training other representatives on how to lie to customers.  ADT and Vision Security settled in court last year for more than $2 million dollars.

Authorities say call police if you notice suspicious activity. You can also check with the ADT Deceptive Sales Response Team at 1-888-238-6131.

ADT is also offering up to $25,000 rewards to people who, with video, can prove that alarm companies have trained employees to use deceptive sales practices. For more information on that program,  http://www.adt.com/resources/adt-rewards-program
