Police warn of thefts at York County parks

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police are warning people who use the York County Heritage Rail Trail and York Township’s Stump Park to keep valuables in their vehicles out of sight.

York Area Regional police said more than a dozen vehicles in the parking lots have had windows broken during thefts reported over the past two weeks.

The thefts have occurred in parking lots along Days Mill Road and Brillhart Station Road, a portion of the rail trail that is in a secluded area.

"It's one of the fuller parking lots on the trail," biker Denae Klinefelter said.

Police believe the thieves hide and wait for people to leave their cars unattended.

"We've always been concerned about that in isolated areas," biker Judy Glazier said.

Rail trail regulars who park in the lot say it's one more thing to worry about.

"It is really scary and I am actually going to start thinking about parking in another parking lot now," Klinefelter said. "It's really ignorant. I think it's ruthless to come up to someone's car and steal things. It's other peoples stuff, so don't touch it. If you are that desperate for money or that iPod that's in the car, go get a job and buy it."

Anyone who sees anything or anyone suspicious in the parking lots is asked to call 911 and get a good description of suspicious people and vehicles if they leave before officers arrive.

Anyone with information should call York Area Regional police at 717-741-1259.
