PALMYRA, Pa. (WHTM) -

Construction crews have closed a section of Route 422 east of Palmyra for up to 90 days for a project that many hope will be a permanent fix for a recurring sinkhole.

Route 422 was closed Monday between Plaza Drive and Apple Blossom Road in North Londonderry Township.

Construction crews will build a 100-foot underground bridge to span the recurring sinkhole.

"With this concrete slab we will have a steady surface and it will not affect the roadway in the future," PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said.

During the next three months, the nearly 16,000 drivers who use the section of Route 422 will use a detour that follows Route 934, Route 322 and Route 117.

Local traffic will follow Apple Blossom Road, East Maple Street and Plaza Drive around the closure.
