Mercury spill at waste water treatment plant

Posted: Updated:
LEMOYNE, Pa. (WHTM) - Emergency officials say there was a mercury spill at a waste water treatment plant in Lemoyne.

County officials say a chemist was inside the plant when he spotted the mercury just after 10 p.m. Thursday. He also reported seeing the substance on the steps, both inside and outside of the building. It's unclear at this time how much mercury was spilled. Officials say the chemist was the only person in the building at the time. He was not hurt.

The sewer plant is undergoing a multi-million dollar upgrade. Contractors are removing a lot of the old equipment. Officials believe something in the old equipment possibly broke and caused the mercury to spill. County officials say at this point they don't believe there's an immediate risk.
