The York County coroner's office has identified the person fatally shot by state police Saturday in Springfield Township.
Joseph Penderghest, 40, of Herndon, Virginia was identified as the man killed by state police gunshots when he reportedly approached troopers with a knife.
It happened on the 6600 block of Reynolds Mill Road. Authorities were dispatched there for a reported crash.
When they arrived on scene they encountered a Penderghest in a vehicle which had struck several parked cars and a telephone pole out side of an apartment complex.
As troopers approached the driver, they saw him trying to cut himself with an 8-inch folding knife.
Troopers tried to stop the man from harming himself, and refused to listen to verbal commands.
They tried to subdue him with pepper spray and tasers, but were unsuccessful.
Penderghest then turned on the troopers and moved toward them with the knife.
The troopers were then forced to fire their weapons, fatally wounding the man.
State police, the York County District Attorney's office, and the York County coroner's office are conducting an investigation.
An autopsy with toxicology is scheduled for Monday.
