STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WHTM) -

A huge new $678 million telescope will be used by Penn State astronomers.

The National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy approved construction costs. Penn State will be one of its member institutions.

The telescope will have a camera the size of a small car (27 feet in diameter) and will track asteroids and comets that could collide with the Earth.

The telescope will be called the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope or LSST.

Penn State has participated in its planning since 2005.

It's expected to be operational by 2019 and begin full operations in 2022. It will be located in Chile, which will offer a better view.
