Expect to share roads with school buses as school begins for many districts

Posted: Updated:
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - As many students in our area get set to head back to school today, school bus drivers have some important information they want to share with riders and drivers alike.

Tiffany Fach with Rohrer Bus Company was up bright and early Monday morning.  She'll be driving students in the Cumberland Valley School district on their first day back.  Fach and PennDOT remind students of the following when riding the bus:

* Get to the stop five minutes early so you won't have to run across the road to catch the bus.
* When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic.  Line up at least five giant steps away from the curb.
* Never run after the school bus if it has already left.
* Never push when getting on or off the school bus.

As for drivers who will now be back to sharing the road with school buses after having a break this summer:

* Leave 15 or 20 minutes early during the beginning of the school year to allow extra time for school buses finding their way.
* Stop at least 10 feet away from a stopped school bus,
* Wait until the red lights on the bus have stopped flashing and the stop arm is no longer extended before moving.
* Do not move until all children have reached a place of safety.

Drives should be aware that if they are convicted of violating Pennsylvania's School Bus Stopping Law, they will receive a 60 day driver's license suspension, five points on their driving record and a $250 fine.
