HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - There are nearly 20,000 veterans in Dauphin County alone. Many have financial issues but don't realize money is out there for them.
The first step to getting it is reaching out to the county for help.
"Last year was a record year for us in Dauphin County," county commissioner Mike Pries said. "We assisted 129 veterans, bringing a record total of over $2.7 million in medical and pension benefits. That's a great thing for our veterans out there."
The Dauphin County Veterans Affairs office assists vets in lots of ways. It provides free services and connects those who served our country with benefits they may not even know they were eligible for.
The office will help with processing all the paperwork needed to get federal, state, and county benefits.
There are pensions available for vets who were injured, property tax exemptions for disabled vets, and education help for children of vets.
"Veterans who give and have given years of their most prized personal treasure -- years of their life serving and defending this grateful nation -- it's the least we can do to assist them," said Pries.
The Veterans Affairs office also helps with funeral costs. It offers $100 to assist with burial expenses for a veteran and $75 toward the installation of a headstone.
Pries says the money is there, you just have to take advantage of it.
"There's 129 veterans out there and their families that are very, very happy they got in contact with us," he said. "We were able to help them."
