PENNSYLVANIA (WHTM) — Pennsylvania falls include Halloween festivities, corn mazes, and apple and pumpkin picking, but none of that would quite feel like autumn if it wasn’t accompanied by beautiful fall foliage.

“Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than any other state in the nation — or anywhere in the world,” according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Only three regions in the world — the British Isles and parts of northwestern Europe; northeastern China and northern Japan; and eastern North America — support deciduous forests that change color in the fall, the DCNR says.

“Each year we are blessed with the opportunity to view some of the world’s most beautiful fall foliage here in the commonwealth,” DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said in a press release. “It is important to remember that Pennsylvania is a large state with more than 130 native tree species. This gives residents and tourists plentiful opportunities to see a wide array of colors.”

So if you’re wondering when and where to catch the best fall foliage in the state, the DCNR releases weekly fall foliage reports, which started this year on Sept. 29.

Here is the most recent fall foliage report from the DCNR:

Fall foliage in Pennsylvania typically peaks in October, the DCNR says. Red maple trees and oak trees adopt shades of red and burgundy while yellow poplars and northern hardwoods like birch trees turn yellow, explained Ryan Reed, natural resource program specialist in the Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of Forestry communications section, in a previous interview with abc27.

Reed said the trick to a perfect colorful fall is just the right amount of rain mixed with cool temperatures.

Sept. 29 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

As of the Sept. 29 DCNR report, Midstate counties are not yet seeing any significant change in their leaves. Some of the northernmost counties in the state — McKean, Potter, Susquehanna, and Wayne counties — are approaching their best color. Leaves across western and northern Pennsylvania are starting to change.

Oct. 6 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

According to the Oct. 6 DCNR fall foliage report, leaves in the Midstate and in southeastern Pennsylvania are starting to change. Northern and a few southwestern counties are approaching their best color. Fall foliage in McKean, Potter, Susquehanna, and Wayne counties is at its peak.

Oct. 13 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

Leaves in some parts of the Midstate are approaching their best color, according to the Oct. 13 DCNR fall foliage report. Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Cumberland, and Franklin counties are approaching the best color, which means that peak color in those counties is about one week away! Adams, York, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster counties are starting to see their leaves change color, according to the DCNR report.

Leaves across most of northern Pennsylvania are at their best color this week, according to the report, although colors in a few northern counties are starting to fade. Counties in southeastern Pennsylvania are just seeing the leaves start to change.

Oct. 20 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

Peak fall foliage is arriving in the Midstate! According to this week’s fall foliage report from the DCNR, leaves have reached their best color in Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Franklin counties. Leaves in Adams, York, and Lancaster counties are approaching their best color.

Fall foliage in most of Pennsylvania’s northern and western counties is starting to fade. It is peaking this week in southcentral and eastern Pennsylvania, while the state’s most southeastern counties are still approaching their best autumn colors.

Oct. 27 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

Southeastern Pennsylvania, this is your week! According to the Oct. 27 fall foliage report from the DCNR, leaves are at their best color this week for Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties in the Midstate.

Other counties in southeastern Pennsylvania are also at peak fall color this week, according to the report. Leaves are starting to fade now across most of Pennsylvania, and some — mostly northern — counties are now past their peak.

Nov. 3 DCNR fall foliage report highlights:

The fall colors are just about gone from Pennsylvania now, according to the Nov. 3 DCNR fall foliage report. Leaves in the most southeastern counties in the state — including Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties in the Midstate — are starting to fade. The trees in the rest of Pennsylvania are now past their peak, according to the DCNR.
