Author Spotlight: Dr. Richard Sommers', "Challenges of Command in the Civil War"

Challenges of Command in the Civil War explores generals and generalship.  Half the book focuses on the generalship of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, especially in the great Virginia Campaign of 1864-65. Four more chapters cover Federal corps and wing commanders at Gettysburg, Antietam, and Petersburg and Northern citizen-soldier corps commanders throughout the war.  The final chapter, “Founding Fathers,” identifies scores of family ties between the greatest generations of the 18th and 19th Centuries. – Synopsis of “Challenges of Command in the Civil War”
