YORK, Pa. (WHTM) - A Midstate woman is sharing the story of her incredible fight with cancer.
Ruth Eckert spent 21 years as a nurse in the Air Force before she began working for WellSpan in York. In 2017, she was diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine screening.
Eckert endured five months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation therapy before getting a hysterectomy. During that surgery, doctors found she had ovarian cancer as well, so she underwent another eight months of chemotherapy.
Finally, her tests have come back normal, and she credits the support of her family, especially her mom, who is a 49-year cancer survivor.
"I think the big thing was talking to my mom who just turned 85 and is doing very well," Eckert said. "My family was extremely supportive and I had some of the best co-workers I could have asked for."
Through all of her treatment, Eckert says she never took a single day off work.
