CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — According to PennDOT, a crash occurred on PA 581 eastbound at Exit 5: US 11/15 northbound (Gettysburg/Camp Hill) at around 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 17.

According to PennDOT’s Safety Press Officer Fritzi Schreffler, the first crash involved two passenger vehicles near the 581 east on-ramp from Route 15.

Schreffler also states that a tow truck responded to the first accident.

While the tow truck was helping with the first accident a third vehicle hit the back of the tow truck.

According to Schreffler, the coroner was called for the third vehicle’s driver.

Pennsylvania State Police later said that the driver, a 28-year-old man from Carlisle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers were taken to Penn State Holy Medical Spirit Center for treatment of serious injuries, according police.

Schreffler said injuries from the initial crash were non-life threatening.

As of 10 p.m. on Sunday night, Schreffler said all lanes would remain closed on 581 for a few hours.
