A Pennsylvania fund that provides scholarships and grants to the children of incarcerated parents will now benefit kids who lost parents in violent crimes.

Legislation to expand the First Chance Trust Fund was included in the budget bill known as the Fiscal Code.

The fund was created last year to provide scholarships and other programs for students who live in areas with statistically higher high school dropout rates, incarceration rates, and high crime rates.

Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin) authored legislation to expand the program in House Bill 1929. He said children who are victims of violent crimes or lost their parents as the result of a violent crime deserve just as much attention and assistance.

“Just as we want to help show children of incarcerated parents there is another path to follow in their lives, we will now be able to provide the same opportunities to children whose parents were tragically taken from them,” Marsico said in a statement.
