Lamont Jones works directly with children on the front lines from neighborhoods where violent crime is on the rise.

“It really bothers me. It could have been me or one of my children,” Jones said.

He says despite Sunday’s tragic loss of young life, he along with other grassroots organizations are making a difference by shaping young minds.

“We are not going to save everyone but the effort itself is overwhelming because there is so much to be done and again we need more hands-on-deck,” Jones said.

Many say it’s important to focus on kids. Because often, once they become young adults, it’s too late to change their minds. But, Lamont Jones disagrees. He connects with men and women in their early and mid 20’s on a weekly basis.

But, Jones says that trust doesn’t happen overnight.

“If I say we are going to hang out today and go look for a job today and we are going to sit and talk and if I am putting in that time now, I am gaining that trust and they get to hang out with me and see what I am doing,” Jones said.

The shooting investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Harrisburg police at 717-558-6900 or through the CRIMEWATCH website here.
