HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A Harrisburg School Board member has died from coronavirus.

Gerald Welch, 56, died early Wednesday morning. Welch was elected last May and sworn-in to the board in January.

District officials and fellow School Board Directors will honor Mr. Welch and his dedicated service during a special time of remembrance at the April 20, 2020, virtual School Board and Receiver’s Business Meeting.

Harrisburg School District Acting Superintendent, Mr. Chris Celmer responded to the loss saying, “We are truly saddened by the passing of Harrisburg School Board Director, Mr. Gerald Welch, a true champion for others. We applaud and are extremely grateful for the unwavering support that Mr. Welch shared with the students, families and staff of the Harrisburg School District. As a true public servant, Mr. Welch was a passionate advocate for students and the broader community. The incredible manner in which Mr. Welch served and gave to others was a positive gift to our District.“
