HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The man killed after falling into the water near Harrisburg’s Dock Street Dam was identified by a Dauphin County official as Michael Brook of Waynesboro.

According to City of Harrisburg Director of Communications Matt Maisel, Brook’s body was located Thursday near Harrisburg International Airport after he and another man fell into the water around 7:30 a.m.

Officials say one man was rescued by another boat out fishing. Officials at the scene say the man was able to walk to the ambulance on his own. Maisel confirmed later the man was able to communicate with investigators.

Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline says his crews were thrown off their boat twice due to the fast-moving water during their attempted rescue mission on Thursday morning.

“This river is not a lake,” said Enterline. “This river is constantly moving, there’s constant velocity. That velocity kills, and we see it time and time again, not just here at the low head dam, but throughout Pennsylvania on our rivers and streams.”

Harrisburg Fire, Susquehanna Township Rescue Fire Company, and a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter were among the first responders at the scene on Thursday morning, and searched for nearly two hours for the second boater. Officials later determined the water was too dangerous for crews to be out on the river.

This is not the first death involving the Dock Street Dam. Officials say the area around the dam, called “the boil” is extremely dangerous.

“We actually call these drowning machines,” Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Sgt. Lawrence Furlong said. “It will actually pull you back into the dam, so anything under the water in the dam could basically just be spinning around and around in circles, not able to come out at all.”
