According to the initial report just before 3:00 a.m., Chambersburg police offices and the fire department responded to N Main Street. Upon arrival, they discovered an SUV traveling westbound on Lincoln Way East struck the Memorial Foundation and Statue, which caused damage to both.

Chambersburg Police say that Gary Hummel of Pottsville, Pa was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol, according to his blood tests at the hospital.

“There are four main pedestals holding it up, and on those pedestals, there are four sculptures, two of them were badly damaged, may even be destroyed,” Chambersburg Assistant Borough Manager & Public Works Director David Finch said.

Hummel sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment.

After an initial investigation, the department discovered that the same vehicle was involved in a hit and run on Lincoln Way E near the Days Inn, according to a report the Pa. State Police received just prior to the accident in Memorial Square.

A criminal complaint will be completed charging Hummel with DUI-Highest Rate and traffic offenses. The Pa. State Police are also investigating the hit and run.

Finch says the borough is already talking about ways to protect the fountain from another accident like this one.
