Neighbors say a 9-year-old boy was sitting on his sidewalk playing with sidewalk chalk when a bullet came through a basement window and struck him in the back.
“I can’t believe it, very shocking,” said neighbor Crystal Rodriguez.
“It was shocking, I mean I couldn’t believe something like this happened on the block,” said neighbor Teena Fillmore.
Police say the 9-year-old was shot in the back accidentally by a family member during a family gathering on Easter Sunday.
“When I heard that I said that was truly heartbreaking I have three children of my own and I said I couldn’t imagine anything like that happening to my kids,” said Rodriguez.
The family member reportedly “test-fired” the handgun in the basement on the 600 block of the home on Madison street, the bullet went through a door and a window and hit the boy.
We spoke to the boy’s older brother who says the 9-year-old remained in the hospital Monday evening.
According to the District Attorney’s office, no charges have been filed against the family member handling the gun. Police have declined to identify the shooter.
