The photos allegedly were taken Tuesday near the Central District Police Station and sent to WBAL-TV in Baltimore. The news station said Baltimore Police officials have confirmed the authenticity of the photos and have launched an internal investigation and condemned the sign.

“The nature and the posting of wording in one of our transport vehicles is both concerning and unacceptable,” Baltimore City police said in a statement. “We have recently become aware of the wording and have begun an internal investigation to determine all the circumstances surrounding its placement and to identify the person or persons responsible for its posting. This is an incident that is being taken very seriously.”

The sign stirs debate following the death of Freddie Gray, who died in police custody after suffering a fatal neck injury in April after being improperly secured in the back of a Baltimore police transport van. Gray’s death sparked a series of protests and riots across the country. Six officers were indicted on charged connected to Grays’ death.
