Subaru WRX STI is famous for high performance. The STI Type RA kicks it up a notch, with even more power and go-fast goodies.
Limited to only 500 cars for the U.S., the RA package includes massive brakes, super-strong forged wheels, and high-grip tires. A carbon fiber roof also reduces weight.
The car is available in white, black, or blue.
One of the things I could do without on the street is this big, gaudy rear-wing, even though it is made of genuine carbon fiber.
On the track though, this wing would provide downforce to keep the Subaru planted to the pavement.
Inside, the racer stuff continues with a basic cockpit, and no navigation. A virtual boost gauge keeps track of the turbo-charger, while a short-throw manual shifter meshes with low-ratio gears.
All-wheel drive differentials can be adjusted in several ways depending on the road surface.
With beefed-up internal parts, the 2.5 liter flat-four engine puts out 310 horsepower, thanks in part to the top-mounted intercooler that cools air going into the engine.
There are not many cars that are as fun to drive as the STI RA. It’s fast, sure-footed, and sounds great. The ride though may be too harsh for many drivers.
For the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA, I say thumbs up to fun to drive, exclusivity, and sedan practicality. Thumbs down to being expensive, and the harsh ride.
The Subaru averaged about 22 miles per gallon, and the as reviewed price is just under $50,000.
