Police: Watch out for Florence scams

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - Pennsylvania State Police are reminding people to watch out for scams that appear to be charities for the victims of Hurricane Florence.

The agency has provided tips to ensure your donations are used to support the intended cause.

Police said people should be suspicious of phone calls asking for money and never provide personal information such as a social security number, date of birth, credit card number, or address.

Donate to charities you know and trust, and be aware of copycat names and names similar to those of a legitimate charity.

Remember that most legitimate charities do not request donations by cash, gift cards, or money transfers.

You can vet any charity at websites recommended by the Better Business Bureau: give.org, charitynavigator.org, charitywatch.org, and guidestar.org.

If you think you have been the target of a scam, report it by filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
