CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Franklin County is going through an economic boom, adding 1,200 jobs over the last 12 months.

The future is looking just as bright.

ABC27 News reported in the past how Cumberland County is the fastest growing county in the state. Franklin County is also seeing increased numbers and is sixth on the list.

Letterkenny Army Depot is the largest employer in the county.

“We have 2,200 in the industrial side and we have about another 800 in various other activities here on the depot,” depot commander Col. Deacon Maddox said, “so about 3,000 people work at Letterkenny.”

There are all kinds of jobs at Letterkenny Army Depot, like manufacturing.

“We do everything from missile maintenance, rocket science literally, to working on trucks and working on generators and those kinds of things,” Maddox said. “We’re always looking for new work. We’re always looking for folks to come work.”

So are a lot of other places across the county, like Martin’s Potato Rolls.

The business boom is not limited to iconic businesses. New companies from all over the world are building there. But why?

“We know we’re well positioned for growth,” said Mike Ross, president of the Franklin County Area Development Corporation. “Four states, four counties, 40 miles. There’s a lot going on in the 81 corridor that is impacting our growth.”

In fact, 500 to 1,000 more jobs are expected to come to Franklin County this year.

“Success begets success,” Ross said.

Which is also part of the reason why business is booming.

“It creates a sense of momentum in the community,” Ross said.

Not just in Franklin County but across the Midstate.

“Every county that touches I-81 or I-78 or falls into the 83 corridor, the 95 corridor – York, Lancaster and those suburban Philadelphia counties – they’re all doing well. That’s the growth that’s occurring in PA,” Ross said.
