CONESTOGA, Pa. (WHTM) – The Lancaster County SPCA seized several horses from a now-defunct rescue on Monday because the animals had little food and inadequate shelter, according to a court document.

A search warrant affidavit states that seven horses were in an emaciated state when a humane officer on Saturday visited A Life Saved is a Life Saved Equine Rescue, at 35 Silver Mine Road. No hay or water was present in the pasture, two horses were in a lethargic state, and only two small shelters able to house about three animals each were available.

When the officer returned Sunday, only two bales of hay were available to eight horses in the pasture. Only three of the horses were eating the hay, indicating the horses were sick and did not have the desire to eat or the hay was rotten and moldy, the court document states.

Humane officers previously visited the pasture three times in January and spoke to rescue operator Crystal Davis about the lack of food and shelter. Davis promised to purchase additional shelters and adequate hay during those visits. She also indicated that none of the rescue horses were under veterinary care at any time, the document states.

Davis agreed to sign over a horse that was in an emaciated state in late January. The horse died days later and test results indicated the animal had suffered from an untreated virus and had been starved, according to the affidavit.

Davis told ABC27 News the horses were not malnourished but in appropriate condition for just coming from a kill pen.

Brett Hambright, a spokesman for the Lancaster County district attorney’s office, said authorities are considering animal cruelty charges. He said they’ll make a decision by the end of the week.Get breaking news, weather and traffic on the go. Download the ABC 27 News App and the ABC 27 Weather App for your phone or tablet.
