LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) –  Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman has some ideas for punishing repeat DUI offenders in Pennsylvania, and he hopes state lawmakers are listening.

Stedman met with ABC27 Monday morning to discuss some of his recommendations.

One idea, Stedman said, is to take repeat offenders’ vehicles. Vehicle forfeiture by authorities is something he says will work as a deterrent.

“If the word got out they are going to take your car, there is no question in my mind that you’ll deter further offenses from a number of people, not everybody. You are not going to stop all of it” Stedman said. “I think that is the kind of message that is going to resonate pretty easily with everybody and we’ll have widespread affects.”

The second offense would have to occur within 10 years of a prior conviction.

Changes would come from the state legislature.

Stedman says making stricter DUI penalties is a discussion worth continuing.

“I think everybody needs to have a perspective, to be fair and discuss the issue,” Stedman said.
