16 local Red Cross volunteers continue Hurricane Michael recovery efforts

It’s been a few weeks since Hurricane Michael. Midstate volunteers remain on the ground to continue recovery efforts.

The Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region says of the 36 people it sent, 16 are still in Florida.

About 1,000 people in the panhandle are still in shelters, so volunteers continue to deliver meals and provide mental health support.

“The recovery is long,” said Christopher Weidenhammer, the deputy regional disaster officer for the American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region. “We’re anticipating that the response will go into December and the priority is still getting those thousand people out of the shelters and working through the recovery process.”

Of the 80 volunteers the chapter deployed for Florence, all but one has returned.
