Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office says a hotline for reporting child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic church received 1,071 calls in its first month.
The hotline was set up after a grand jury found decades of abuse by clergy at six Pennsylvania dioceses, including Harrisburg.
The grand jury’s report released Aug. 14 says more than 1,000 child victims were identified during a two-year investigation, but the real number is likely in the thousands because records were lost and many victims were afraid to come forward.
The report identified more than 300 “predator priests” and other clergy members accused of crimes against children since the 1940’s.
The hotline number is 888-538-8541.
