A teacher at Big Spring Middle School has been charged after police say he had inappropriate social media conversations with a former student between the ages of 15 and 17 years old.
Johnathan Hocker, 28, of New Cumberland, provided the student with his Tumblr username. The girl told police the communication was innocent when it started, but escalated to being more sexual in nature, according to a news release from state police in Carlisle.
The posts included graphic images and videos that depicted various sexual acts, bondage, choking and role play, police said.
Police said that after an analysis of Hocker’s work laptop and the victim’s cellphone, he was charged with unlawful contact with a minor, obscene and other sexual materials, and corruption of minors.
In a statement, Big Spring superintendent Dr. Richard Fry said the district is “saddened and disappointed to learn of the criminal charges.
“When the district first learned of allegations of misconduct involving Mr. Hocker in October, 2017, the administration notified local law enforcement and immediately removed Mr. Hocker from the school building,” Fry wrote.
“He has had no contact with students since that time as the district placed him on indefinite leave without pay, pending the outcome of law enforcement investigation.”
“The district is aware of no evidence that Mr. Hocker’s alleged behaviors extended to any other students,” he said.
Hocker was arraigned Friday and then released on unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 23.
