Earl Reitz, the longtime warden of the Cumberland County Prison, will retire on Friday.
Reitz was worked at the prison for 42 years. He began his career as a correctional officer in 1976.
While society may think differently of the inmates at the prison, Reitz sees them as people who need help.
“When people come in our back door, they’re in pretty bad shape, either emotionally or physically, and we try to get them out of here in better shape than they were when we received them,” he said.
Reitz says he plans to hunt and travel more during his retirement.
Travis Shank, the deputy warden for security, will take over for him.
