Man struck on I-81 near Carlisle

A man changing a flat tire on the berm of Interstate 81 was struck and injured by a passing truck Friday afternoon, police said.

The accident at 12:20 p.m. closed both northbound lanes between the College Street and Hanover Street exits for more than an hour.

One northbound lane reopened around 1:40 p.m. The other lane remained closed until around 5 p.m., slowing traffic on several miles of the interstate throughout the afternoon.

Both southbound lanes were temporarily closed so a medical helicopter could transport the man to a hospital.

Police said the injured man was hit by a water tank truck at mile marker 45.3 in South Middleton Township.

A medical condition was not available.
