Harrisburg bishop on pending grand jury report: ‘It’s important we get this right’

The leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg says he strongly supports the release of a grand jury report into allegations of clergy sexual abuse in Pennsylvania, but Bishop Ronald Gainer says he’s also concerned about due process rights.

“It’s important that we get this report right,” Gainer said in a statement Friday.

The grand jury is expected to soon finish its investigation into Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania, including the Harrisburg diocese. The investigation began in 2016 and followed allegations of abuse and cover-up in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Altoona-Johnstown diocese.

“The Diocese of Harrisburg is, and has been, fully cooperating with the Office of the Attorney General,” Gainer said in the statement. “Each diocese is separate and faces a different situation. We continue to consider all of our options in law as we move forward.”
