Area mosques hike security after threats

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) – Local mosques are increasing security because of threats against them on social media and over the phone.

Dr. Azim Qureshi, president of the Hershey Islamic Center, says they called police at the beginning of the month. He says things escalated last Friday when people posted on Facebook about mosques in the area and one person who commented wrote, “blow them up.”

Qureshi would like the chance to speak with people who he feels don’t understand his religion.

“Instead of reacting to whatever they hear from internet and whatever media they follow, come to our mosque, talk to us, sit down with us, listen to us, see who we are,” he said.

The Hershey Islamic Center will have heightened security throughout Ramadan this month.
