STEELTON, Pa. (WHTM) - Rise dispensary in Steelton will begin serving patients this week. It’s the first dispensary to open in Dauphin County.
"We are seeing history here in Steelton. This is the first new building that we have had in downtown Steelton in many years," Mayor Maria Romano-Marcinko said.
The lot at 801 South Front Street used to be row homes and later various restaurants. An open house was held Monday so the community could tour the new facility.
While the dispensary will help patients, there is also hope it will help Steelton bounce back.
"We chose Steelton in particular because of the need for economic revitalization. We understand what happened to this community; it was essentially decimated during the exodus of the steel industry," said Jonathan Gusdorff, managing partner of KW Ventures Holdings. "My understanding is since the permit was awarded in June, four or five businesses have started to take root in this town as well, so we are already starting to see a turn around in the economy."
"We are in a renaissance or a rebuilding in our economic development and it means a lot. It is going to help so many people in this area," said Romano-Marcinko.
Rise will employ about 15 people and will also have locations in Carlisle and York.
The Rise dispensary in Steelton will open to patients May 3.
The Rise dispensary in Carlisle will open May 5.
