Harrisburg man arrested for assaulting police officer

A Harrisburg man is charged with assaulting a city police officer.

Kevin Rios, 33, tried to flee and then fought with the officer early Sunday in the area of South 17th and Mulberry streets, police said.

Officers were responding to a domestic incident when they spotted Rios, who matched the description of the suspect.

During the altercation, police said Rios appeared to be under the influence of drugs and pulled at the duty belt that held the officer’s firearm. A passerby assisted the officer until other officers arrived on the scene.

A Taser was ineffective, but Rios tripped and fell when he again tried to flee. He was eventually detained, injuring an officer in the process.

Police said he dropped a bag of marijuana during the struggle, and he was carrying a 9mm firearm that was registered to someone else.

He is charged with aggravated assault, escape, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, public drunkenness, a firearms offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
