Harrisburg police honor officers, welcome recruits

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - The Harrisburg Bureau of Police held its annual swearing-in ceremony at the Forum on Tuesday.

The department welcomed five new police officers and recognized others for their efforts to save lives.

The ceremony honored city and Capitol Police officers who searched for an 8-year-old boy in the Susquehanna River after he drowned while swimming on City Island in May 2017.

Two Dauphin County deputy sheriffs were honored for their efforts to rescue a man who drove his car into the river.

Dozens of police officers, dispatchers, and civilians received awards for their efforts last December when a man fired shots at a Capitol Police officer and a state trooper. Ahmed El-Mofty was later killed in an exchange of gunfire with city police.
