Recent precipitation and significant snowmelt from New York has delayed the launch of the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat to at least May 3.
Jason Meckes, the executive director of the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society, said the organization aims for river levels of between three and seven feet to safely launch the riverboat. Levels of five feet or less are necessary for the docks to be installed.
On Friday afternoon, the river level in Harrisburg was just over eight feet.
The society had planned to launch the riverboat this week.
“We’ve had to cancel a few events and shuffle around the calendar a bit,” Meckes said. “It’s an unfortunate reality of running such a weather-dependent operation. We’re now coordinating May 3 with the National Guard as a launch date, and we hope that the river levels cooperate.”
