Mail workers protest over efforts to privatize postal service

There were no mail deliveries on Columbus Day, but some letter carriers showed up at work on Monday to protest.

Several postal workers at the post office along Jonestown Road in Lower Paxton Township are protesting efforts to have the postal service privatized.

They say doing that would cost jobs through consolidation.

“We have a nationwide network of transportation, so if a private business would come in, they would take Harrisburg but wouldn’t take Grantville, Ono, Jonestown. So, rural America would be greatly affected by this,” said Mark Danndeker, of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

The postal service is carrying billions of dollars in debt, which is helping to drive supporters of privatization.
