A new member of Harrisburg Police Departments K9 team will go active duty on Monday.

K-9 Arco is a 14-month-old German shepherd from the Czech Republic. He and handler Officer Kelly English have spent about two weeks together for initial training in North Carolina.

Now back in Harrisburg, the pair will spend another week training before reporting for duty on June 4.

“He’s awesome,” English said of his new K9 partner. “He has a lot of tendencies toward the first shepherd that I had. He is going to work out just well.”

“They are invaluable to the entire department. They can do things that it would take 10 or 15 officers to complete,” he said. “Sometimes, we can’t complete the task without the dog. They have amazing noses and detect things we would never find.”

Arco will join five other dogs on the unit that do scent and patrol work.
